Jay Day's America: Katie Rose Cullen

Deep in the Hollywood Hills, nestled high above Mulholland Drive, twenty-something Katie Rose Cullen lives with her beloved Dalmatian, Token. A photographer and filmmaker, Katie Rose is a soulful creative, the kind of person you would think is a Hollywood native.

However, Katie Rose hails from a long line of Texans and one of the greatest and most philanthropic oil families in American history. Katie Rose is a poetic mix of Texas in her unassuming warmth, kindness, and charm while embodying the bohemian glamor of 60's Hollywood.

From early childhood, Katie Rose knew she would end up in Los Angeles. Deep dives via the internet researching and dreaming of the day she turned 18, and old enough to live in the City of Angels on her own. A city filled with art, creativity, dreamers, and people pushing the edge of imagination into the tangible world of reality. "I have always been a creative person. iMovie was my passion as a kid and I would make short films and take time editing them for months–-rescheduling play dates over and over again to get the video finished.”

Now, Katie Rose is happily living that dream, filming on her Super 8 camera, navigating the endless pursuit of making friends in a city that is built on transience after being raised in a city where six generations of family roots are the norm.

"It just makes sense, to me there is nowhere better to live. I sit in traffic and will still tell myself how much I love it here.” Many would agree sitting on the 405 freeway in bumper-to-bumper traffic and remaining happy is a litmus test for longevity in Los Angeles. What I know from experience is that a Texan can be put into any situation and land successfully on their feet and I have no doubt that will be the case here. Because Katie Rose is a Texan and a Texan living in any other city is still a Texan.
